In 2002, we bought our first business — a preschool.
The day we closed, the director quit and took every single child with her to a home preschool she opened.
Overnight, we lost:
- 100% of our income
- All of our customers
- And still had full payroll and a full lease to pay
There was no backup plan. I became responsible for getting the phone to ring — fast.
We tried everything: Flyers, newspaper ads, local magazines… mostly silence.
Then in 2004, Google Local Business launched. I created our first listing — and the phone finally rang. That moment rewired my future.
From Desperation to Domination
By 2007, I was selling Google Ads at ReachLocal — knocking doors and making 100 cold calls a day.
On the side, I built Google Business listings for free for local business owners. Then something crazy happened…They started getting more calls than they could handle.
In 2008, while bedridden with a ruptured Achilles, I built LocalMapAttack.com — one of the first fully over-optimized local ranking engines.
That became a full agency.
Then I built LocalSiteSubmit.com, a citation and media distribution platform that submitted businesses to hundreds of directories, video sites, and press networks. In 2015, that company was acquired by Advice Local to compete with Yext.
I exited in 2018.
